Woodcut: First appeared in China in the 9th century, and became popular in Europe during the 1400’s. At first it was used for stamps, textiles and playing cards, but Albrecht Burer in the 16 century turned it into an important art form later.
Lithography: Invented in 1798 by German Aloys Senefelder and became popular in 1890’s with color prints of Pierre Bonnard and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.
Etching: First developed in 16th century after the discovery of acid being used to engrave an image into a metal plate was made. Rembrandt van Rijn, Francisco Goya, and Pablo Picasso have used this.
Screenprint: a form of stenciling invented during 1930’s by American artists for commercial uses. Became popular in 1960’s because of bold colors, flat surfaces, and the commercial look.
- Explain the steps to...
Woodcut:
- Cut the wood with gouging tools. Cutaways won’t be inked.
- Ink with roller
- Print with sheet of paper on it and pressed with spoon
- Finish print by peeling sheet off(picture will be in reverse)
Lithography:
- Engrave on polished slab of limestone
- Ink on engraved image
- Chemical solutions wiped on stone to attract ink
- Wiped with solvent
- Dampen surface of stone with water to perpares surface for inking up
- Oil-based printing ink applied
- sheet of damp paper placed on top of stone
- Inked stone placed on lithographic press and peel off paper
Etching:
- waxy acid-resistant “ground” applied to metal plate
- engrave etching needle onto metal plate
- submerge plate into tub of acid, in which acid eats into of exposed lines that creates an incision
- Remove plate when incisions are deep enough
- Ground remove with solvent
- ink whole plate with dabber
- wipe surface clean so that only incision liens have ink
- Plate is placed upward with dampened sheet of dampened paper on top and then padded blanket on top of that
